Control Rods
Control rods are critical components in a nuclear reactor, designed to regulate the fission process. Made from materials that absorb neutrons, such as boron or cadmium, they are inserted or withdrawn from the reactor core to control the rate of the nuclear chain reaction. By absorbing excess neutrons, control rods help maintain safe operating conditions, ensuring the reactor remains stable and preventing overheating.
HALEU Fuel
HALEU (High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium) is an advanced nuclear fuel containing a higher concentration of the uranium-235 isotope—between 5% and 20% enrichment—compared to traditional nuclear fuel. It enables next-generation reactors, such as small modular reactors (SMRs), to operate more efficiently, produce more energy, and reduce waste. HALEU's increased efficiency makes it a key component in the future of clean, reliable, and scalable nuclear energy.
Control Drums
Control drums are rotating cylindrical devices used in some nuclear reactors to manage the fission process. Unlike traditional control rods, which move in and out of the reactor core, control drums feature neutron-absorbing materials on part of their surface. By rotating the drums, operators can adjust the amount of neutron absorption, allowing precise control over the reactor's power output. Control drums are often used in compact reactor designs, providing an effective and reliable way to regulate reactor activity.
Reactor Vessel
The reactor vessel is a robust, sealed structure that houses the nuclear reactor core and its components. Made from high-strength, corrosion-resistant metals, it provides a critical barrier that contains radiation and ensures the reactor operates safely. The metal container shields the surrounding environment from radiation and maintains the reactor’s internal pressure and temperature, making it essential for both safety and structural integrity in nuclear power systems.
Heat Transfer Rods
Heat transfer rods, also known as heat pipes or thermal transfer rods, are components within a nuclear reactor designed to efficiently move heat generated by the fission process away from the reactor core. Made from materials with high thermal conductivity, these rods transfer heat to a secondary system, where it can be used to generate electricity or dissipated through cooling systems. By maintaining optimal temperatures within the reactor, heat transfer rods play a key role in ensuring safe, efficient energy production and preventing overheating.
Heat Exchanger
The main heat exchanger in a nuclear reactor is a crucial component that transfers heat from the reactor core to a secondary system, where it can be used to generate electricity. It allows the heat generated by the nuclear fission process to be safely and efficiently moved without mixing radioactive materials with the external environment. By circulating coolant through the core and exchanging heat with a secondary fluid, the main heat exchanger ensures stable reactor temperatures and optimal power generation, playing a vital role in the overall efficiency and safety of the reactor system.
