Nuclear Energy Safety Highlights
- Nuclear Energy is amongst the safest energy sources along with wind and solar
- Proven track record with over 20,000 combined operating reactor years spanning across 31 countries
- Strict safety protocols for plants designed with multiple layers of safety systems
- Low environmental impact with zero emissions during operation
- Containment of fueling materials enable safe operation and transport
Source: Our World in Data
Our World in Data displays the drastic difference between Coal, the most dangerous energy source, and Nuclear Energy in relation to their overall safety. When you study a comprehensive review of operating cycles, you will notice there are many things to consider. Air pollution, accidents, and greenhouse gases all contribute to what makes an energy source safe.
The visual above displays how Nuclear Energy is one of the safest and cleanest energy sources we have on the planet. It produces zero greenhouse gas emissions during operation. The operation of these plants is inherently safe given all procedures in place.

Micro Nuclear Reactor (MNR) Safety
A majority what we have discussed so far is based upon full scale nuclear reactors. Many of these aspects apply to MNRs as well. MNR safety is a topic continually developing given the advanced technology incorporated into these units.
Highlights of MNR Safety
- Inherent safety features including natural forces such as: gravity, convection, and radiation that manage heat and ensure safe operation without human interaction
- Extended fuel cycles for years to even many decades reduces the need for fueling operations
- Small size and contained systems enable MNRs to have more efficient controls and containment
- Simplified designs enable ease of monitoring with less moving parts
- Modular construction means MNRs are built in factories rather than a job site ensuring quality and standardization
- Remote operation and monitoring detect in real time potential issues and can correct them enabling less onsite personnel

MNR designs are incredibly safe, with some being designed to be installed underground as displayed by Ultra Safe Nuclear.
Nuclear Energy is one of the safest forms of energy on our planet and it critical to develop in order to achieve our 2050 net zero goals.
